Eco actions

Each week we have an Eco action to think about.

You can read them it on the front page or our website.

Here are the ones we have thought about so far.

1  DON’T STAND BY

Turn appliances off instead of leaving them on stand-by, which can actually use almost  as much energy as leaving them on full.

2  NO CLINGING ON

Avoid using cling film (plastic wrap) wherever possible as the manufacturing process is environmentally unfriendly – it takes a lot of energy to produce a single roll. It is far greener to cover food with washable cloths or lid.

3  HALVE THE AMOUNTS

Most people use far more shampoo and conditioner than they need. Why not half the amounts you use and see if you can tell the difference –chances are your hair will be just a shiny!

4  MAKE BEST USE OF PAPER

Paper can only be recycled four to six times before it is useless, so make sure you make as much use of it as you can. Make it a rule never to throw away a blank piece of paper.

 5  WALK

Every mile you walk is estimated to add 20 minutes to your life. Walking is also the greenest transport, as every single journey in your car, taxi cab, bus or train contributes to air pollution.

 6  GETTING BIGGER

If your school uniform is getting too small and is in good condition, don’t throw it away give it to a smaller friend.

7 RAG BAG APPEAL

Bring your unwanted clothes, household textiles or shoes this Friday to be recycled and raise funds for our school .

 8. GLENDLAE BAG FOR LIFE . Remember that we have hessian bags for sale at the school office. Much better than using plastic bags.

9. BUY LOCAL   Next time you go shopping with a grown up look and find out where things come from. Try to buy food that has not been on an aeroplane!

10 FAIR TRADE

Fair trade products guarantee to give the people who grow them a fair share of the profits. Look for the fair trade symbol when you are shopping.

11 STAY COOL

Try to open your fridge as little as possible. When warm air gets in , extra electricity is needed to cool it down again.

12 SAVE WATER

Don't leave the tap running while you are brushing your teeth. Have a shower instead of a bath, it uses less water.

13. HANG DRY Help at home and the environment too by learning how to peg out the washing. No need to use a tumble drier now the weather is better.
