Read about Class Eco news through the Ten Eco Topics.

BIODIVERSITY

Primary 2 have completed their Minibeast topic by building a Bug Hotel. Working together on a wet Friday morning we had such an exciting time. First of all we picked the best site .

We chose a site on  soil , surrounded by trees and shrubs.

We had been collecting materials at home to bring in for the hotel  build.

Next we filled the bottles with dry twigs, cones, cardboard , feathers and dry leaves

We placed the bottles in the palettes with cardboard rolls, stick and leaves.

The bug hotel got bigger and higher.

And now it is finished,,,

We are now waiting for the bugs to move in??

FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT

P1 harvested their potatoes. The children were so excited to see what had grown and enter the  Grow Your Own Potatoes competition. http://www.gyop.potato.org.uk/.  Unfortunately we were very disappointed as there were not very many potatoes to collect. We think that the recent cold weather has stopped the potatoes growing.  The plants were health and probably would  have grown much more over the holidays - to enter the competition we had to pick them by the end of June!

However we cooked the few that we had and everyone had a taste the next day.

Even though there were only a few they tasted yummy!

FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Primary 5/4 have planted butternut squash seeds. Children took the seeds fresh from the vegetable and planted them straight away. They have turned out well.

 BUY LOCAL

Next time you go shopping with a grown up, look and find out see where things come from. Try to buy food that has not been on an aeroplane!

They made charts and diagrams about where food comes from. Great work.

SUSTAINING OUR WORLD

Primary 3   Have been finding out about Earth Hour http://www.earthhour.org/

 FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Primary 1       We are planting potatoes and are going to watch them grow. First we had to 'chit' them on the window sill for 2 weeks.  Next we planted them in a little soil. When they start to grow we cover them with more soil. This a good website about growing potatoes. http://gyop.potato.org.uk/

Aneese in Primary 1 took all the photographs. What a great photographer!
